Did you know that tucked away on an open piece of ground in the busy precinct of Umhlanga Ridge is the Umhlanga Farmers’ Market?
The market, depending on which stallholder we spoke to, has been in existence for 20 to 25 years. It convenes every Wednesday from 8am to 12pm in Autumn Drive, Prestondale (next door to the Umhlanga Police Station). Present stalls include fruit and veg, artisan cheese, honey, jams, pickles, vegan goodies, coffee (the pop-up kind), biltong, proteas, meat and fish, eggs, flowers, herb plants and organic fertilisers, as well as clothing and some household items.
Umhlanga Tourism visited on a sunny spring day and enjoyed browsing the stalls and talking to the friendly stall holders. The sellers are generally small businesses, sole entrepreneurs and small farmers. ‘The idea is to give small businesses and farmers a platform,’ said market organiser, Alexa. Some farmers come weekly from as far afield as Underberg, others from just up the road in Verulam.
Many of the stalls focus on homemade, fresh (e.g. eggs that were collected from the hens that day) and organic. It’s a pleasure, therefore, to know that food purchased is directly from the farm, without preservatives or harmful pesticides and, of course LOCAL.
We were amazed at the low price of some of the fruit and veg and the ability to choose loose items as opposed to being forced into buying the larger packaged quantities supermarkets offer.
Although holidays are busier times for the market, there is a steady stream of regulars throughout the year. Payments can be made in cash or Zapper.
Make sure you visit this market gem in Umhlanga. We’ll definitely be back!
